  I hate sub-titles November 4, 2008 0 out of 6 found this review helpful
I don't care how much a reviewer says they enjoyed this movie, it is not in english and I feel that I have been ripped off. Amazon should do a better job of letting a potential buyer know that the film being purchased is in a foreign tong. If you don't like sub-titles, save your money.
Pan's Labyrinth review November 3, 2008 This is my first review of anything, but I had to comment on this great story. I like fantasies anyway, but was pleasantly surprised the first time I saw Pan's Labyrinth. The photograpy, settings, make-up, acting (in spite of subtitles)was all fantastic. Put this together with a wonderfully rich and layered story - made it in my mind one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. I have just seen it for the fifth time, but this time on Blu-ray - Wow..
Fantastic film! LOUSY DVD PRESENTATION!! November 1, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
You'd think a big money making hog like New Line could get their **** together and release such a visually magnificent piece of cinematic art with AT LEAST a watchable dvd presentation. Ppffff! Oversaturated colour, serious artefacing, no shadow detail, flat picture, blacks turn to red. It didn't look like this in the cinema! Way to go big soulless corporation! You've taken our money and turned a piece of heart felt art into another McProduct...
Many, many years ago in a sad, faraway land ... October 31, 2008 This has been one of the most amazing films I've seen in a long time since The Lord of the Rings Trilogy appeared in theaters. I did not get to see Pan's in the theaters, but my breath was taken away when I first saw this on DVD.
We are taken into Ofelia's world of stories - mostly fairy tales. As she journey's with her mom to meet her new step father in a post-Civil War Spain in 1944. On her journey she follows a fairy into the depths of a Labyrinth where she meets a Faun who challenges her to perform three tasks to complete before the full moon. If she is successful she will be able to return to her world as Princess Mona and to be with her father again.
While Ofelia is experiencing her own world of fairy tales. The post-Civil War continues around her. She befriends a woman named Mercedes who cares for the home and the family. I can not comment on the accuracies of the war, but I believe Del Toro did the historical aspect justice. There are very intense scenes through out the movie, but Ofelia's world makes you able to escape from it for a while and get through each moment of the movie.
You have a mixture of very loving characters everyone from Ofelia's mother, Ofelia herself, Mercedes, and quite a handful more. The creatures are very believable and were amazingly realistic. I was taken back to the years of my love for Jim Henson movies.
Other themes I spotted were a possible take on the original tales for adults by The Brothers Grimm and my personal favorite Alice in Wonderland. There are many elements and other themes sprinkled throughout the film which is fun to pick out. I also constantly rediscover new things when I rewatch the movie.
The music is also extremely beautiful and haunting and almost like what you would hear in a lullaby.
Amelie may have captured my heart for foreign films, but Pan's has clinched it. I think these films are very fresh and something brand new. It is my favorite form of storytelling and it also takes me back to my own childhood.
The DVD I have - I have not yet fully explored. However, I love what it has to offer so far. Audio Commentary w/director, Making Of, The Power of Myth, El Fauno y Las Hadas featurette, Directors Notebook, Photo Gallery, Storyboards, and tons more!
The most Beautiful thing October 27, 2008 This movie is just like watching the most beautiful thing in the world die. The music is first class. It truly delivers an emotional response that evokes sadness, beauty, fear, angst, happiness. This film is a must watch. If you are squeamish, then don't watch the Pale Man scene, as cutting that out doesn't detract too much and the most gruesome scene of any movie. Watch this movie, and you may come away with a deeper understanding of the human emotion
