After a brutal ambush, a friend's murder, and an unexpected betrayal, professional bodyguard Atticus Kodiak suddenly discovers that he has been falsely identified as one of The Ten, a short list of the world's most wanted assassins, and must transform himself into the killer he is supposed to be in order to survive. This is actually the first novel I've read by Greg Rucka. Apparently I should have read his previous novel first because this did not make a very good stand alone thriller. It didn't give you any of the history of the characters and left out a lot of background. Overall just a very average thriller.
Worth the wait October 31, 2007 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Readers first encountered Atticus Kodiak in CRITICAL SPACE, which released in 2001. Greg Rucka's character has returned with a vengeance in PATRIOT ACTS, and the most immediate question is if it was worth the wait. The answer is an emphatic "yes!"
Rucka does such a great job bringing new readers (along with those of us with short memories) up to date while moving the story along at Warp Factor 7 that you'll intuitively grasp what has gone before, even if it isn't immediately explained. The author doesn't mess around, however, and in the violent world he has created for Kodiak, it is clear that literally anything can --- and does --- happen. Suffice to say that Kodiak and Alena, Kodiak's uneasy paramour and sometime teacher, are on the run from an adversary who apparently has unlimited resources and is using them to take the pair permanently off the board. They have no idea who this person is or why they are being pursued, and have little time to wonder why.
Rucka moves things along brilliantly --- from flight, to escape, to ground, to investigation --- as Kodiak and Alena begin to turn things around. They gradually and painstakingly become the pursuers even as they themselves are being tracked down, establishing first the answer to the question of who, and then to the question of why they are being pursued so relentlessly and with terminal intent.
There are many memorable moments in the novel. After reading it, however, I couldn't help but conclude that there are two everyday acts that I will be unable to perform without thinking of this book for some time to come. The first is pumping gas; the second I won't give away, but it's something a great number of us do around the house, particularly in the summer and winter, sometimes without thinking about it. Read it and see.
PATRIOT ACTS is a riveting and an engrossing work, arguably Rucka's best to date. He wisely leaves a couple of secondary issues dangling that could serve as springboards for a follow-up if he so chooses. Hopefully, fans will not have to wait another six years for Rucka's next novel.

Another great installment in the series October 25, 2007 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Mr. Rucka was my introduction to the whole "Mystery / Thriller" genera and this book is another great installment in the series. You can read it without having read the others, but you will be missing lots of the back-story and the evolution of Atticus.
I liked the older Kodiak novels, each had its strong points and I have enjoyed watching the character grow and change in each book. The growth and changing made Atticus more real, and the books more enjoyable than the ones that use the standard "male protagonist, type 45" over and over.
As with all of his books it is descriptive enough that I had the feeling of being there with the protagonist, but not so nit picky that it bogs the story down. It does move slower than it's predecessors, and the mood is darker and more introspective.
And as always: Would I look at any other books by this author in the future? Yes Would I spend list price on it again? Yes
Survival at any Cost October 18, 2007 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
Atticus Kodiak, who made a previous appearance in Critical Space, is forced to become a cold-blooded killer when he is ambushed and his partner is shot dead. Previously, he protected clients from such violence. He teams up with a woman known as "Drama," one of the 10 best assassins in the world. Atticus thus becomes what he professed not to be--a murderer--and is now labeled one of the "10" as well.
As a result, he becomes hunted by all the resources available to various authorities. He and has partner lay low for three years, until they decide they have to do something to put an end to the chase. The problem is: they don't know who was behind the original ambush or why. But revenge for the murder of his friend and partner becomes a must for Atticus, and the suspenseful adventures begin.
The novel is finely honed, although in the end a little far-fetched. Nevertheless, as an action thriller, the novel lives up to the best of expectations.
"Then I shot him twice in the head." - Rucka rocks another tale of Atticus Kodiak. October 16, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
The sixth chapter in the Atticus Kodiak series is, in a word, outstanding.
The plot is intriguing, and the most overtly political of the Kodiak series, with the bad guy a Washingtonian Rove-Cheney mashup tying into the work of military "contractors"/mercenaries - topical, if nothing else. But it's the character beats that always stick out and make the work exceptional.
Some will decry the "sudden" changes in Kodiak or the direction the character goes. Belying the fact that the "sudden" changes took the entire last book in the Kodiak series - Critical Space - one of the things that I've always dug about Rucka's writing is that he allows his characters to make horrible personal and professional choices - just like real people - and deal with the consequences, rationalizing and fighting through their decisions all the while.
But I'd disagree with the concept that he's a completely different character now. Everything Kodiak does in this book, in his own twisted way, is for the memory of his friend. And that's been, to a great extent, the core of the character. Loyalty. To his friends and to his clients. And just how far you go for that loyalty.
In short, a great read. Finished it off in the course of half a Saturday and enjoyed the hell out of it. Well worth your time and hard earned dollars.
