Product Description
Newline Pan's Labyrinth (Blu-ray) From acclaimed director Guillermo Del Toro ("Blade 2", "Hellboy") comes a dark supernatural epic about the ultimate battle between good and evil. When young Ofelia and her mother go to live with her new step-father on a rural military outpost, she finds herself in a world of unimaginable cruelty. Soon Ofelia finds the creatures of her imagination in which she used to escape have become a reality and she must battle them to save both her mother and herself. In the terrifying battle that ensues, Ofelia soon learns that innocence has a power that evil cannot imagine.

Inspired by the Brothers Grimm, Jorge Luis Borges, and Guillermo del Toro's own unlimited imagination, Pan's Labyrinth is a fairytale for adults. Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) may only be 12, but the worlds she inhabits, both above and below ground, are dark as anything del Toro has conjured. Set in rural Spain, circa 1944, Ofelia and her widowed mother, Carmen (Ariadna Gil, Belle Epoque), have just moved into an abandoned mill with Carmen's new husband, Captain Vidal (Sergi Lopez, With a Friend like Harry). Carmen is pregnant with his son. Other than her sickly mother and kindly housekeeper Mercedes (Maribel Verdu, Y Tu Mama Tambien), the dreamy Ofelia is on her own. Vidal, an exceedingly cruel man, couldn't be bothered. He has informers to torture. Ofelia soon finds that an entire universe exists below the mill. Her guide is the persuasive Faun (Doug Jones, Mimic). As her mother grows weaker, Ofelia spends more and more time in the satyr's labyrinth. He offers to help her out of her predicament if she'll complete three treacherous tasks. Ofelia is willing to try, but does this alternate reality really exist or is it all in her head? Del Toro leaves that up to the viewer to decide in a beautiful, yet brutal twin to The Devil's Backbone, which was also haunted by the ghost of Franco. Though it lacks the humor of Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth represents Guillermo Del Toro at the top of his considerable game. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars Dark, Imaginative, & Beautiful   August 25, 2008
This movie surprised the heck out of me. I wasn't expecting it to be as dark or as violent in select scenes as it is. It's very imaginative and the film itself is beautiful like a moving painting.

It is definitely not for children. Too violent, too dark, & too creepy for them. My girlfriend couldn't watch many of the scenes, and she's 31.

Great movie, nice historical setting, great surprise. It is a sad movie, so be forewarned.

3 out of 5 stars The reg DVD is better - no good extras   August 21, 2008

The picture is better, but this has nothing really in the way of extras. If you have the original DVD just stay with that.

4 out of 5 stars SubTitled   August 15, 2008

I enjoyed the movie very much and would have given it 5 Stars, but like the movie it self, it is sub-titled. Too me this takes a lot away from the movie, I'm a slow reader, trying too keep up with the dialouge. I wish that they could have put an english track on it for me. Other than that, It's a great movie!

1 out of 5 stars shallow and disgusting   July 30, 2008

This film is a ahallow political melodrama full of stock one-dimensional characters dressed up with special effects and lots of pointless violence carried out by evil "men" against women and children. I get the impression that the director wanted to make an expensive heavy-handed "message" picture on the spanish civil war and figured out that the way to get it made was to repackage it as a "fantasy" picture.

As a fantasy picture, it fails for two important reasons. The first is that it is loaded up with postmodernist contempt for the whole idea of fantasy: its for the stupid, the mad or for small children. All the fantasy elements in the film are dismissed in the end as the mad self-destructive delusions of a doomed child. The second reason is that when the fantasy genre is mixed with heavy-handed real-world politics, it never works.

The film's view of the spanish civil war is overtly political and childish. Its less sophisticated and more melodramatic than star wars. Darth General and his faceless stormtroopers face off against the brave rebel alliance which though it is weak always wins. The richness of the spanish civil war in a dramatic sense is its ambiguity as reflected in author's like Orwell. There is none of that here. Nobody among the brave rebels questions why they are continuing to fight a war that was lost six years previous. Nobody ever considers the effect of the war on civlians caught in the middle. The army is full of "evil" man-monsters who kill the "good" women and children. The rebels outnumber the army, beat it at every turn, have sophisticated base complexes and are supported by everyone. The question left unanswered is why the all-powerful rebellion is on the losing side.

The violence is totally over the top. There are amputations, bloody pregnancies, death in childbirth, images of child sacrifice, torture, mutiliation, knifings and execution-style shootings.

I watched this film because of all the talk, awards and recommendations. But there is nothing about it that really recommends it.

Postscript:

The hostile feedback votes associated with this review are obviously faked. Its easy to spot fake feedback because it is generally completely out of proportion to the feedback given to other reviews created about the same time. Whoever is creating the fake feedback should do a better job.
