Amazon.com If you've been wondering what ever happened to ex?Green Beret superwarrior John Rambo since he singlehandedly shot up a Pacific Northwest town (First Blood, 1982), returned to the jungles of 'Nam to free U.S. POWs held long after war's end (Rambo: First Blood Part II, 1985), and interrupted the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan long enough to blow lots of stuff up and rescue his old commandant from the Reds (Rambo III, 1988), then Rambo (2008) is for you. Without so much as a IV to dilute the brand name, Rambo--which is what most of us called the second, most iconic film in the series--may aspire to open a new era for a pop legend. But it's a thoroughly mechanical attempt to reanimate a franchise that, absent the anger, frustration, and self-loathing of the post-Vietnam years, has no meaning or purpose. For some time now Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) has been putt-putting along the Thai-Burmese border in a longboat, catching exotic snakes to sell. As for the 60-year civil war in Burma between the brutal government and the Karen independence movement, he ignores it. Enter a party of American missionaries whose dewy blond spokeswoman (Dexter's Julie Benz) asks Rambo to haul them upriver so that they can bring medical aid to the insurgents. After the requisite number of monosyllabic refusals, he does. Soon afterward the do-gooders are in a world of hurt, and he's summoned to lead a squad of mercenaries on a rescue mission. As storytelling, the latest Rambo is the most bare-bones of the bunch. Rambo has little to say, so it's especially galling that Stallone, as director and co-writer, obliges him to have essentially the same conversation at three different points (the final distillation: "Live for nothing or die for something"). The Burmese army goons seem in competition to commit the most hideous atrocity (e.g., child skull-crushing underfoot), the better to justify the eventual, lovingly protracted spectacle of them being eviscerated by high-powered weaponry. Although shot in Thailand, the movie has mostly been photographed in brown, reducing any particular sense of place but, perhaps, perversely increasing our gratitude for the splashes of purple whenever hot metal tatters flesh. --Richard T. Super Entertainment! August 19, 2008 To keep it short, this movie has a great story. It's also absorbing and realistic, with up to date special effects. There is also good character development. The movie kept me on the edge of my seat. Some movie critics may not like Stallone, however, I think he plays these "action" roles very very well. He doesn't have to use a lot of words, because the few words he uses are meaningful, powerful, and pertinent to the movie. I am confident you will enjoy the movie, like I did! I purchased the movie from Amazon, and it was shipped by Movie Revolution in MN. They gave me good service!
Rambo August 18, 2008 Awsome! The sound quality is amazing! Absolutely love the sound of the machine gun on the blu-ray copy!
RAMBO August 12, 2008 Definitely much better than the third installment, the most violent of the four. Rambo got older and gain weight a little but still knows how to fight. The blu ray transfer is pretty good, both video & audio, paying extra for it sure worth it.

Fans of the original three should definitley catch this one, you will probably be best off to just buy it at once. I haven't felt this visceral since the first movie, it's that impressive and Sly looks great at Sixty. Once again John Rambo is fighting injustice, this time in Myanmar (previously Burma). Apparently since we last saw Rambo he has spent years in Thailand and Myanmar catching snakes and miscellaneous other jobs to get by. When Rambo takes a church group up river to give medical aid and Christian teaching to people suffering the religious cleansing he feels they won't make a difference and he leaves. The village and the group is later ambushed by soldiers. Most the village is killed but several in the Church group survive. Rambo finds out and feels he must return to rescue them.
The problem is a mercenary group has been sent in to extract them and they don't want Rambo's company past the point on the river he dropped off the Church group. Once again John won't take no for an answer and after he polishes off a few enemies with his trusty bow they are happy to have him. John proceeds to blow enemy soldiers up with Claymores and anything else he can get his hands on. When he gets his hands on a .50 caliber machine gun he cuts them to pieces literally. The effects and stunt people did a masterful job of making it look realistic. So be prepared for some major carnage that shouldn't be seen by younger viewers. One slight complaint is I would have liked it a little longer to develop the characters just slightly more, not to mention I didn't want it to end so quickly. I still think the first movie is the best in the series because of the story and characters, but this one is probably second because of how well it shows real events with realistic effects. Good quality DVD with reasonable replayability. If you enjoyed this catch the other "Rambo" movies or "Ruckus" for a lighter take on this story that came out pre-Rambo First Blood. - C. Luster
