This is the first of Ruckas's I have read and probably reading the earlier adventures of Atticus Kodiak would have given me the background I needed, but I am just reviewing this book as a stand-alone novel and it failed. After such a long wait, I was hoping for more! June 14, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful The "Atticus Kodiak" series (Keeper, Finder, Smoker, and Critical Space) by Greg Rucka is one of the best around with regards to mystery, suspense and action. Instead of turning the protagonist into the usual run-of-the-mill private detective, Mr. Rucka made our hero a professional bodyguard and took the reader into a world that few know about, including myself. Things, however, changed drastically in Critical Space when the author had Kodiak protecting one of the world`s top assassins, Alena Cizkova, and then falling in love with her before they eventually joined forces to fight the trained killers hired by the United States government to silence both him and her. I suspect many of Rucka's fans were scratching their heads in confusion with that one (though it was still a great novel), wondering about the direction the series was now headed in. It's taken seven years for the newest "Atticus Kodiak" novel to finally come out, and it continues where Critical Space left off. In Patriot Acts, Alena and Atticus are still on the run, but this time a close friend of Atticus' is killed while attempting to protect them from a government hit. From that point on, the story deals with Atticus and Alena seeking revenge over a four-year period, traveling across Easter Europe and the United States, and then achieving retribution from the man who ordered their deaths...a man who works inside the White House. I wanted to enjoy this novel. I really did. After all, it had been a long wait for the return of Atticus Kodiak, but something just didn't click for me. My feeling was that the author had lost some of the passion he'd originally had for the characters. I had trouble with most of the shootouts that take place, not buying how they were set up and then executed on the written page. They simply didn't ring true to me. The escape of Atticus and Alena from a motel room in Montana (or was it Wyoming?) when the place is supposed to be surrounded by a S.W.A.T team had me rolling my eyes in disbelief. I also had problems with the fact that Atticus sustains a number of physical beatings throughout the book, not to mention gunshot wounds to his body; yet, he somehow manages to heal quickly and then return to his normal activities. I guess it's because he's in such great shape from yoga and healthy eating. Strange as it may seem, I found myself enjoying the quiet times between Atticus and Alena and the love that grows between them more than I did the action scenes. I was also surprised by which one of Atticus' closest friends is chosen to die at the beginning of the novel by the author and then what happens between Atticus and his dead friend's father at the end. Though what happens later is explained, I kept scratching my own head and wondering if the author really expected his readers to buy it. It idn't make sense to me. Now, Patriot Acts isn't a completely bad novel. I've read worse, plus I did manage to finish it. The problem is that the book could've been so much better after a seven-year wait. I think a large number of the fans were hoping for the same thing. This wasn't any good. Which is a shame, because i liked Ruckas earlier books and his comics with DC were brilliant. The plots have shifted focus also. But this time it feels ok. Politics infects everything. Greed is the sin. You will enjoy. What a long wait for this one....I have missed Atticus and almost need to go back and re-read the previous books as a refresher. Those new to the series shouldn't start with this one, it will not be as satisfying. Four stars only because I miss Bridget and Erica, otherwise it would be five...not sure I like "Drama" too much....shocking and exciting book.
